We are looking for an experienced Principal Full Stack Engineer to shape the technical direction of a global SaaS platform serving millions of volunteers across multiple countries. In this senior individual contributor role, you will combine hands-on software development with architectural leadership to build scalable, resilient, and maintainable systems. You will work across multiple product teams, solving complex engineering challenges and driving critical initiatives from technical discovery through delivery. With a strong focus on Laravel, Next.js, and cloud infrastructure, you will help evolve a modern platform toward event-driven architecture, domain-driven design, and AI-augmented capabilities. You will influence engineering standards, strengthen software quality, and mentor developers through collaboration and technical excellence. Accountabilities
- Technical Architecture and Direction: Own the architecture and technical direction of core platform domains, establishing scalable modular boundaries, event-driven workflows, and foundations for AI-enabled capabilities.
- Hands-on Engineering: Dedicate approximately 60–80% of your time to designing, coding, reviewing, debugging, and pairing on complex technical challenges across Laravel, PHP, Next.js, and cloud environments.
- Cross-Team Technical Leadership: Work across multiple product squads to resolve complex engineering problems, lead technical discovery, and deliver high-impact initiatives that span teams and systems.
- Engineering Standards: Define, document, and promote architectural principles, coding standards, and development patterns that improve system reliability, maintainability, security, and observability.
- Quality Engineering and Delivery: Champion shift-left testing, robust test strategies, CI/CD improvements, regression control, and production monitoring to ensure consistent software quality and reliable releases.
- Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing: Guide senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pairing sessions, and constructive feedback, empowering them to take ownership of systems and technical decisions.
- Innovation and AI Integration: Evaluate and prototype emerging technologies, including generative AI workflows, AI agents, data pipelines, and tools such as Vertex AI, helping teams adopt practical solutions that enhance product capabilities.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partner with engineering leadership and technical leads on long-term architecture, roadmap planning, estimation, prioritization, and technical trade-offs while ensuring engineering health remains aligned with business objectives.
- Platform Evolution: Support architectural improvements involving event-driven systems, distributed workflows, cloud infrastructure, and future platform capabilities, including AI readiness and multi-cloud development.
Requirements
- Professional Experience: At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including experience in a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or Software Architect role within a SaaS environment.
- Backend Development: Deep expertise in Laravel 10+, PHP 8+, or comparable backend technologies, with strong knowledge of RESTful APIs, relational databases, SQL, caching, and backend system design.
- Frontend Engineering: Strong experience with React and modern frontend architecture, ideally including Next.js and the ability to design maintainable, scalable user-facing applications.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Proven experience building and operating secure, scalable cloud-native systems, with AWS required and exposure to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) highly desirable.
- Architecture and Distributed Systems: Familiarity with event-driven architectures, modular system design, containerized environments, Kubernetes/EKS, asynchronous workflows, and distributed system principles.
- Software Quality and Delivery: Deep understanding of testing strategies, automated validation, CI/CD pipelines, production observability, performance optimization, and regression prevention.
- AI-Driven Development: Experience using AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot or Gemini, automating development workflows, and improving feature delivery through test generation, scaffolding, and code assistance.
- AI-Augmented Products: Familiarity with integrating large language model APIs, prompt design, generative AI workflows, or AI agent architectures. Experience coaching other engineers in AI-assisted development is an advantage.
- Additional Technical Strengths: Knowledge of analytics platforms such as Looker or BigQuery, data pipelines, machine learning workflows, message queues such as AWS SQS or Kafka, and distributed-system performance tuning is beneficial.
- Leadership and Communication: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to influence technical decisions without relying on formal management authority.
- Product and Business Mindset: A proactive, adaptable, and customer-focused approach, with the ability to translate product goals into sound technical decisions, manage ambiguity, document decisions clearly, and collaborate across disciplines.
