Job Description

Role Summary:

The Engineer III is an experienced individual contributor who independently designs, develops, implements, and supports secure, reliable, scalable, and maintainable enterprise integration solutions. The role combines strong EDI and API engineering capabilities with technical ownership across middleware, messaging, file-based interfaces, automation, modernization, and platform services. The Engineer III consistently delivers high-quality work, contributes to technical decisions and design reviews, guides peers and junior engineers, and helps shape solutions across systems, services, platforms, and products within the assigned domain.

Working across engineering teams and business stakeholders, the Engineer III drives complex integration delivery, strengthens operational resilience, improves code quality and performance, promotes engineering standards, and translates business and customer needs into effective technical solutions. The role also contributes through mentoring, knowledge sharing, documentation, continuous improvement, and portfolio or department-level initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  Software, API, and Platform Development

  • Design, develop, configure, test, implement, and support application components, services, APIs, EDI translations, middleware integrations, and platform capabilities.
  • Independently develop and maintain REST-based APIs, web services, system interfaces, reusable components, and automation utilities using established engineering standards and architectural patterns.
  • Perform thorough self-reviews and code reviews, provide actionable feedback to peers and junior engineers, and improve the maintainability, reliability, security, and performance of solutions.
  • Develop and maintain automated testing strategies, including unit, integration, API, and end-to-end test coverage to improve software quality and reliability
  • Optimize complex code, mapping logic, services, and integration flows to reduce processing time, resource usage, defects, and repeated implementation effort.
  • Use approved AI-assisted development tools responsibly to support coding, testing, documentation, defect detection, and technical analysis while maintaining established quality and security standards.

EDI and Enterprise Integration Delivery

  • Design, develop, and support enterprise integrations across ANSI X12, EDIFACT, XML, JSON, CSV, flat files, APIs, middleware, messaging, event-driven communication, and managed file-transfer patterns.
  • Own complex EDI and integration projects, including requirement interpretation, mapping and transformation logic, interface design, validation, testing, implementation, deployment, and post-production support.
  • Analyze input and output data, envelopes, acknowledgements, partner configurations, routes, canonical structures, and downstream system behavior to confirm accuracy, completeness, and expected processing.
  • Troubleshoot complex applications, API, middleware, mapping, dataflow, transactions, communication, and performance issues by isolating root causes and implementing sustainable solutions.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and downstream impacts early, and recommend mitigation approaches for complex or cross-system changes.
  • Contribute reusable integration patterns, utilities, templates, and documentation that improve quality and consistency, acceleratetime to market, and strengthen team effectiveness.

API Engineering and Modernization

  • Design, consume, test, secure, document, and support REST APIs and related system interfaces, including API contracts, request and response structures, validation, error handling, and versioning considerations.
  • Contribute to API enablement that complements EDI capabilities and supports modern, reusable, and self-service integration experiences where appropriate.
  • Apply microservices, messaging, event-driven, distributed system, and domain-driven design concepts to assign solutions when applicable.
  • Contribute to application modernization initiatives, including migration from legacy platforms to modern architecture and engineering practices.
  • Collaborate with platform, architecture, security, product, and adjacent engineering teams to align API and integration solutions with enterprise patterns and strategic objectives.

Technical Design and Architecture

  • Lead or actively contribute to technical design for systems of significant size and near- to mid-term business impact.
  • Participate actively in technical design reviews, provide feedback on other designs, incorporate feedback, and help shape technical decisions of significant complexity, ensuring alignment with Engineering Principles and architectural standards.
  • Apply Engineering Principles and approved architectural patterns to improve modularity, interoperability, reliability, scalability, maintainability, security, and observability.
  • Evaluate system dependencies, design tradeoffs, operational impacts, failure modes, and downstream effects when developing or changing solutions.
  • Document technical designs, API contracts, data mappings, implementation decisions, test evidence, deployment details, operational procedures, and support findings.

Engineering Practices and Operational Excellence

  • Own technical decisions for daily work and ensure conformity to Engineering Principles, coding standards, development processes, security practices, and deployment procedures.
  • Actively enable Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery through automated builds, testing, quality checks, and deployment practices.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, observability, telemetry, logging, alerting, and operational automation capabilities to improve system resilience and operational excellence
  • Participate in production support and on-call rotations; guide operational resilience for systems contributed to and engage effectively in incident management and response.
  • Contribute to operational and security automation and identify recurring support or delivery activities that can be simplified or automated.
  • Continuously improve code quality, system performance, delivery efficiency, and customer experience through root-cause analysis and preventive action.
