Marketing interview rounds: what to expect

  • Screening: your channels (SEO, paid ads, social, email, content, PR), tools and the brands or clients you worked on.
  • Portfolio or campaign discussion: goal, audience, budget, what you did and the result.
  • Assignment: a campaign plan, ad copies, a content calendar or an SEO audit, usually due in 24 to 72 hours.
  • Final round with the marketing head or founder: thinking, ownership and culture fit, then salary.

How freshers should prepare

  • Get free certifications that teach the basics: Google Ads, Google Analytics (GA4) and Meta Blueprint.
  • Build proof: run a small page or blog, promote a college event, or create sample ads and a content calendar for a brand you like.
  • Learn the core metrics: CTR, CPC, CPM, CPL, conversion rate, ROAS and engagement rate, and how to calculate them.
  • Study the company's website, social pages and ads before the interview and note two ideas.

How experienced marketers should prepare

  • Make a one-page portfolio: three campaigns, each with goal, channel, budget, what you did and numbers.
  • Be ready to explain budget allocation across channels and how you measure return on spend.
  • Prepare a campaign that failed and what you changed, and how you test (A/B tests on creatives, audiences or landing pages).
  • Know your tools in depth: Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager, GA4, Search Console, SEMrush or Ahrefs, HubSpot, Canva.

The assignment round

  • Answer the brief that was given, state your assumptions and keep it practical.
  • Show the plan, the channel mix, a small budget split and how you would measure success.
  • A clear five-page plan beats a long deck; submit on time.

Common mistakes in marketing interviews

  • Talking about likes and followers only, without leads, sales or cost.
  • Claiming a campaign result that was the whole team's without saying your own part.
  • Not knowing the company's own marketing.

Top digital marketing interview questions with sample answers

Tell me about a campaign you are proud of.

Use goal, audience, channel, budget, action and result: "For a coaching institute we ran Meta lead ads in three cities with Rs 1.5 lakh; by testing four creatives we brought cost per lead from Rs 210 to Rs 120 and got 1,200 leads in a month."

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO earns organic rankings through content, technical fixes and links; it takes time but keeps working. SEM usually means paid search ads (Google Ads), which bring traffic immediately but stop when the budget stops.

How do you calculate ROAS and CPL?

ROAS is revenue from ads divided by ad spend (Rs 3 lakh revenue on Rs 1 lakh spend is a ROAS of 3). CPL is ad spend divided by the number of leads.

A campaign is not performing after a week. What do you check?

Tracking first (are conversions recorded correctly), then audience, creative and copy, bids and budget, and the landing page. Change one thing at a time and give it enough data before deciding.

How would you launch our product in a new city with a small budget?

Define the target customer, start with the cheapest channels that reach them (local search, Google Business Profile, targeted social ads, partnerships, WhatsApp communities), set a test budget, measure cost per lead and scale what works.

What are the main ranking factors in SEO?

Content that matches search intent, technical health (crawlable, fast, mobile friendly), relevant internal and external links, and a good page experience. Mention what you have done on each.

Which metrics do you report every week?

Spend, leads or sales, cost per lead or acquisition, conversion rate and ROAS for paid; traffic, rankings and conversions for SEO; reach and engagement for social, always tied to business results.

What is a marketing funnel?

The stages a customer goes through: awareness, consideration, conversion and loyalty. Each stage needs different content and is measured differently.

How do you do A/B testing?

Change one variable (headline, image, audience or landing page), split the traffic, run until there is enough data, then keep the winner and test the next idea.

Which tools have you used?

Name them with what you did: Google Ads for search campaigns, Meta Ads Manager for lead ads, GA4 for conversions, Search Console for SEO, Canva for creatives, HubSpot or Mailchimp for email.

Which brand's marketing do you admire and why?

Pick an Indian or global brand you know well, name one specific campaign and explain why it worked for its audience.

What salary do you expect?

Give a range based on your experience and the market, and connect it to the results you have delivered.
