Job Description
Insight Global is seeking a Technical Lead / Solution Architect to provide technical leadership for the modernization of a complex legacy engineering application suite from Visual Basic 6 to a modern .NET-based architecture.
This individual will serve as the technical leader of the delivery team and will be responsible for establishing the modernization strategy, defining the target-state architecture, guiding development standards, and resolving complex migration challenges.
The Technical Lead / Solution Architect will work closely with the .NET developers, React developers, QA Automation Engineer, Heat Transfer Subject Matter Expert, and client stakeholders to ensure the modernized application maintains functional and engineering equivalence with the legacy platform.
The ideal candidate will combine strong architecture experience with hands-on .NET expertise and a demonstrated ability to lead complex legacy application modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

• Own the technical architecture and modernization strategy for the VB6-to-.NET transformation.
• Assess the existing VB6 applications, code dependencies, UI components, business logic, engineering calculations, and technology risks.
• Define the target-state .NET architecture and technical roadmap.
• Establish development standards, design patterns, coding practices, and reusable components for the modernization team.
• Determine appropriate strategies for replacing or remediating legacy ActiveX, OCX, COM, and third-party controls.
• Lead application decomposition, dependency mapping, and modernization sequencing.
• Establish technical patterns for replacing legacy VB6 constructs, including:

o On Error
o Resume Next
o GoTo statements
o Windows API declarations
o Variant data types
o As Any declarations
o Late-bound object creation
o COM object dependencies

• Provide hands-on technical guidance to the .NET and React developers.
• Conduct architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design sessions.
• Ensure consistency across multiple development workstreams.
• Partner with the Heat Transfer SME to ensure embedded engineering calculations and workflows are accurately represented in the modernized application.
• Partner with the QA Automation Engineer to establish application testability, regression-testing requirements, and technical acceptance criteria.
• Identify technical risks and blockers early and lead them through resolution.
• Establish technical documentation requirements, including architecture diagrams, integration designs, dependency maps, and modernization decisions.
• Ensure the resulting platform is maintainable, supportable, extensible, and appropriately documented.
• Operate as a self-directed technical leader with minimal dependency on day-to-day client oversight.

Skills and Requirements
Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• 7+ years of hands-on C# and .NET development experience.
• Significant experience architecting complex enterprise applications using Microsoft technologies.
• Proven experience leading legacy application modernization or migration initiatives.
• Strong experience with C#, .NET Framework, and modern .NET.
• Experience analyzing or modernizing VB6 applications.
• Strong understanding of:

o COM and COM Interop
o ActiveX
o OCX controls
o Windows desktop application architecture
o Object-oriented design
o SOLID principles
o Enterprise design patterns
o Multilayered application architecture

• Experience modernizing complex applications while preserving existing business functionality.
• Strong experience conducting code reviews and resolving complex application issues.
• Ability to lead senior technical professionals without requiring continuous client direction.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to translate technical risks and decisions into clear business language.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience leading VB6-to-.NET, VB6-to-VB.NET, or VB6-to-C# modernization initiatives.
• Experience replacing unsupported third-party controls with modern alternatives.
• Experience with React or modern front-end architecture.
• Experience with Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
• SQL Server experience.
• Experience with industrial, engineering, manufacturing, aerospace, or calculation-intensive software.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure architecture and services.
• Familiarity with automated migration or code-conversion tools.
• Experience delivering software through a distributed or offshore delivery model.
