Senior DevOps / Site Reliability Engineer (SMTS)

We are looking for a Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS) in DevOps to build and run the infrastructure behind our energy and IoT platform. The SMTS will own AWS and Kubernetes in production, keep services reliable, and make sure we get maximum value from every rupee of cloud spend.

This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role. It requires strong DevOps and AWS capability, deep Docker and Kubernetes experience in production, a proven record of cloud cost optimisation, and site reliability practice covering SLOs, observability and incident response. Strong programming skills in at least one language such as Python, Go or Java are essential, because automation here is built as software. This is an AI-native engineering environment: AI coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor are part of the daily workflow. The role requires 5+ years of relevant experience.

THE WORK

Key Responsibilities

AWS & Infrastructure

• Design, build and operate AWS infrastructure across compute, networking, storage, managed databases and IAM, with ownership of resilience and security posture.
• Write and maintain infrastructure as code with Terraform or equivalent, using review, testing and versioning like any other software.
• Manage networking, VPC design, DNS, load balancing and access control across environments.
• Partner with security on secrets management, patching, vulnerability scanning and least-privilege access.

Docker & Kubernetes

• Own Kubernetes clusters in production, including upgrades, autoscaling, resource management, networking and multi-environment setup.
• Define container standards with Docker: lean images, secure base images and consistent build practices.
• Package and deploy services with Helm or equivalent, and drive GitOps practices where they help.
• Troubleshoot workloads across pods, nodes, networking and storage.

Cost Optimisation

• Own AWS and Kubernetes cost visibility, with tagging, dashboards and per-service cost attribution.
• Reduce spend through rightsizing, autoscaling, Spot and Graviton usage, Savings Plans, storage lifecycle policies and removal of idle resources.
• Review architecture and capacity decisions for cost impact before they reach production.
• Report cost trends and savings to engineering leadership with clear recommendations.

Site Reliability

• Define and track SLIs and SLOs for critical services, and use them to guide reliability work.
• Build monitoring, logging, tracing and alerting that is actionable rather than noisy.
• Lead incident response, run blameless post-mortems and drive fixes for recurring causes.
• Plan capacity and run load and failure testing before peak demand or major releases.
• Write runbooks and automate repetitive operational work so on-call stays sustainable.

CI/CD & Automation

• Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines with automated testing, safe rollouts and fast rollback.
• Write production-quality automation and internal tooling in Python, Go or Java rather than relying on ad hoc scripts.
• Mentor engineers on deployment, observability and production ownership.
• Use Claude Code, Cursor and equivalent AI coding agents for infrastructure code, automation and log analysis, and review AI-assisted changes carefully.

• Data & Messaging: PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, MQTT and Apache Flink.
• AI Tooling: Claude Code and Cursor.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Qualifications & Experience

Essential: DevOps & AWS

• 5+ years of experience in DevOps, platform or site reliability engineering for production systems.
• Strong hands-on AWS experience across compute, networking, storage, managed databases and IAM.
• Infrastructure as code (Terraform or equivalent) and CI/CD pipelines built and maintained first-hand.
• Strong Linux and networking fundamentals.

Essential: Docker & Kubernetes

• Deep hands-on Kubernetes experience in production, including cluster-level ownership rather than only deploying to it.
• Strong Docker and container fundamentals, including image security and build optimisation.

Essential: Cost Optimisation & Site Reliability

• Demonstrated cloud cost reduction with measurable savings.
• Experience defining SLOs, building monitoring and alerting, and participating in on-call.
• Incident response and post-mortem experience on customer-impacting issues.
• Strong debugging across application, container, network and infrastructure layers.

Essential: Programming

• Strong coding ability in at least one language such as Python, Go or Java, writing maintainable automation and tooling rather than only shell scripts.

Essential: Ways of Working

• Ability to work independently and bring clarity to ambiguous operational problems.
• Clear written communication across runbooks, post-mortems and design documents.
• Bias towards fixing causes rather than symptoms, and automating rather than repeating.
• Fluent use of Claude Code, Cursor or equivalent AI development tools in daily engineering work.

Desirable

• AWS Certified Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer or CKA certification.
• GitOps with Argo CD or Flux.
• Operating Kafka, Flink or time-series databases in production.
• Chaos engineering or disaster recovery planning.
